Nothing gets past his door.

Stephen Applegate has worked intensive care for forty-two years, most of them on nights. He is also a functional medicine practitioner and one of three partners at Joyful Wellness Center in Cocoa, Florida.

By his own account, he is the hardest sell in the building.

“I’m probably the most skeptical. I research everything before it comes into this building. I make sure it’s the real deal. If it’s not, I won’t let it in.”

He means it. A phone app that claims to scan your body? “I’m sorry, ain’t gonna work for me.”

So when something does make it inside, it has earned the hallway.

It started in a trailer.

About six and a half years ago, a friend sent Stephen and his wife to Inverness, Florida, to meet a team building an energy system inside a closed trailer. His wife went in for thirty minutes.

She came out dancing. “I feel good,” she told them, right there in the yard.

“And I was like, what the hell is this thing?”

The team had neuroscientists, engineers, and sound engineers. What it didn’t have was a clinician. They asked Stephen to be their clinical director. He ran head-to-toe assessments, read the labs, and did something nobody expected: he turned the energy down. A quiet, pulsing field, he found, reached the person better than a loud one bouncing off the walls.

“I have a building.”

He needed a place on the Space Coast to run the room. Joy, a nurse who worked nights beside him in the ICU, overheard him talking about it and asked what on earth he meant.

When he told her he was looking for a space, she said four words: “I have a building.” Follow me after work, she told him. It was twelve thousand square feet. The trailers rolled in.

That is why the center carries her name.

Then an old friend walked in.

About a year after the center opened, Stephen ran into someone from high school: Mark L Fox, the founder of Resona Health. He invited Mark over. Mark showed up with a bag of goodies, and one of them was the VIBE.

“I was fascinated by it, because it goes in line with what we’re doing. Except the difference is you can carry this with you. It fills the gaps.”

His room is a place you visit. The VIBE hangs on a lanyard and goes home with you. It rides along on vacation. It covers the days between appointments. Stephen started handing them to clients who were leaving town and needed something to bridge the gap until they came back.

The part he almost got wrong.

Anyone who has ever built something expensive will know this feeling. Stephen almost didn’t sell it.

“I was nervous at first to sell it, because I thought, well, nobody’s gonna use my energy room. They’ll all be carrying VIBEs.”

A room like his is years of work and a lot of money. And here was a small device that walks out the front door in a client’s pocket. He went out on a limb anyway. He showed it to people, told them to share it with family, and pointed them to the two-pack.

Then he watched the appointment book.

“They still come back for the energy room. So I said, this is a good marriage. We haven’t divorced yet, right, Mark?”

TJ.

TJ is a Labradoodle, and he was his wife’s therapy dog. At thirteen, in February, the vets told Stephen there was nothing more they could do and talked about putting him down.

Stephen brought him to the center instead. TJ ran in the energy room every other day, on the center’s own program. On the days between, and every day he was on the hydrogen, he wore the VIBE, set to Kidney Support, Liver Support, and General Inflammation.

“I’m telling you, the VIBE was really noticeable in the way he recovered so quickly.”

By the end of March, he was acting like a four-year-old. Stephen logged every day and carried the notes back to the vet, who shook her head and asked what on earth he was doing.

Four decades of nights.

Forty-two years of night shifts leave a mark on a man’s sleep. For a while Stephen didn’t even notice the Sleep protocol on the menu. When he found it, he punched it in and lay down.

His cat curled up on one side of the VIBE. His dog took the other.

“They’re both out, and then I was out. I slept all night, except when I had to get up one time at five in the morning.”

He checks his Kario wellness watch in the morning now, and he likes what his sleep numbers show. He runs General Inflammation at bedtime, reaches for Anxiety on the days that running a business earns it, and has worked his way through most of the menu. “I’ve tried it all.”

What he tells the skeptic.

People come in and call it woo-woo. He doesn’t argue. He was that person, and in some ways he still is.

“I say, give it a try. Give it two to four weeks and see what happens. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.”

Then he asks the question that matters: what made you walk over and ask me in the first place?

These days, a lot of his clients walk into the center already wearing one.
