His jaw was just hanging open.
Thor is a rescue — black and tan, maybe Bernese, maybe Rottweiler, nobody's ever been certain — and he lives for two things, in this order: frisbee, then food. One morning Lisa-Marie went to fill his bowl and his mouth wouldn't close.
Lisa-Marie Hyland · Manual therapist · In her own words
She had him at the vet that same day. The clinic started where clinics start when nothing is obvious — a battery of tests, ruling things out one at a time. Diagnosis by exclusion.
Over the next two days it got worse. On top of the dropped jaw, Thor developed Horner's syndrome — the face itself began to droop, the way it does with Bell's palsy in a person. Two things going on at once, and no clear cause for either. Idiopathic, the vet said. She couldn't say what had triggered it or whether it would resolve on its own.
He couldn't eat properly. She rolled his food into little balls and set them on a platter so he could work at them, and helped him get them down. He lost weight. Strong anti-inflammatories, then antibiotics in case something was hiding that the tests hadn't caught. Nothing moved. He kept sliding.
Oh, he was so sad. It was so hard on all of us, seeing him suffer that way.
Lisa-MarieThis is a dog who came to her at ten months old after being badly neglected and abused — a rescue, full of anxiety, who had to be coaxed out of his own shell one frisbee throw at a time until he turned into, in her words, the most joyful dog you could imagine. Now he was despondent, and the people who had spent years building him back up were out of options.
She had one more thing, and it was already in her clinic bag.
Lisa-Marie is a manual therapist. She'd been using the Resona VIBE with her human clients for months. Nobody had told her to use it on a dog with a dropped jaw — there was no protocol for that, because there is no protocol for that.
So she wrote one.
The protocol she built for Thor
- Vagus NerveHer default starting point in almost everything she does.
- TMJChosen for the anatomy — because of where the nerve sits.
- General InflammationRun alongside the other two.
- Infused waterA glass set on the VIBE, run, then given to him on the days in between.
Something every couple of days, water in between. Her own words: "I basically created a protocol."
It works so fast. My vet was just blown away how quickly he recovered.
Lisa-MarieThe vet, as it happened, already knew what PEMF was, and she was open to it — mostly because everything on the shelf had already been tried. Short of starting to investigate the brain, there was nothing else on offer. What impressed her afterward wasn't only the speed. It was that it had been easy, and not invasive at all.
On her application form, Lisa-Marie put it in one line: resolved 100% in about four weeks.
Thor is seven now. He was six when it happened. He is back playing frisbee.
She sees the people who have already tried everything.
Lisa-Marie has run her clinic since 2011, doing manual and alternative therapies. Before that it was bodywork on horses, and light-touch therapy going back to the nineties. Her approach is whole-body rather than hunting down one specific muscle, and that tends to shape who ends up in front of her.
Chronic pain, mostly. Backs, shoulders, necks. Fibromyalgia is a big one. Migraines. And a category she describes carefully, because it doesn't have a tidy name: people who aren't quite unwell in any way a test will show, but who have lost their vitality.
She used a PEMF mat in the clinic for years — brainwave entrainment, binaural beats. It worked. It was also awkward. There's a lot of movement in what she does, and every time somebody rolls over on a mat there's a risk of damaging it.
I saw yours and was so excited about the possibility of just slipping something around someone's neck — and then being able to do all the active things I like to do during treatment.
Lisa-Marie, on switching to the VIBEHer clients took to it immediately. She became a wholesaler almost out of self-defence, because the household had exactly one device and three claims on it: her husband didn't want it leaving the house, she wanted it at work, and her clients wanted it too.
What she hears in the room, over and over, is a sentence she can now quote from memory: I love this little box.
What she actually runs, and why.
Her working stack
- Vagus NerveThe centre of it. A lot of her work is restoring vagal tone, and this is how clients hold that between visits.
- Brainwave Alpha & ThetaUsed heavily alongside the vagus nerve work.
- General InflammationHer broad-support choice when nothing more specific is called for.
- FibromyalgiaOften, for the fibromyalgia clients.
- Targeted, when it's obviousA really sore low back gets the low back program that day.
One thing she's learned: for people fighting constant fatigue, a shorter session can suit them better — not because it's stronger, but because they're already starting out tired.
The part that matters commercially, if you're a practitioner reading this: clients who use the VIBE between appointments can space their appointments out further. She lends devices to clients with economic barriers, rents them to some, and sells them to the many who simply decide they want their own.
A shoulder, in Mexico
One client had worked through a shoulder problem with her and was doing well. Then she went on holiday and woke up one morning with the pain right back at its original intensity — she still doesn't know what she did. She'd hesitated over whether to even bring the VIBE, worried about airport security. Lisa-Marie had told her to take it: tell them it's like an iPod, it'll be fine.
She ran General Inflammation for three days and got the rest of her holiday back.
A hard year
Another client is going through a stretch of genuinely massive stress. She reaches for the Love setting more than anything else, and says it calms her down. She credits the VIBE with getting her through it.
"His thyroid is so high we can't even measure it."
Her cat is very senior, and he had arrived at what looked like the end. He was struggling to eat, had constant diarrhoea, no energy left. The vet ran the tests and the thyroid number was off the chart — not high, unmeasurable. Underneath that she suspected kidney problems, and probably something going on with the heart.
The vet said they might be looking at the end. Lisa-Marie thought they might be too. But it had come on so suddenly that not trying anything didn't sit right with her.
There was also a practical problem with the obvious road. Thyroid medication is hard on the stomach and causes diarrhoea — and diarrhoea was already one of the things that was wrong with him. He doesn't like taking pills. He does, however, drink water every single day.
What she gave him, through his water bowl
- Immune SupportConstant, throughout.
- Vagus NerveConstant, throughout.
- General InflammationConstant, throughout.
- Brainwave BetaAdded into the rotation.
- Whatever was loudest that dayKidney, liver, heart — whichever symptom was most predominant became that day's program.
All of it delivered by infusing his water. "That's what I have done, is just by infusing the water."
Four months on: his respiration has come down — he'd been huffing a little before. His coat has improved. He's walking better.
She volunteers the caveat herself, without being asked. She hasn't taken him back in to redo the bloodwork, because the trip is so stressful for him that she doesn't want to put him through it. So there is no new number. There's only a very old cat who is visibly, daily better.
He's just living his life, doing his thing, drinking his water, getting better.
Lisa-MarieMike noticed. Then Lisa-Marie noticed more.
She bought the BlueVibe for herself. After COVID she'd been left with brain fog and the sense that she just wasn't as sharp, and the brain fog setting helped.
Her husband Mike had been frustrated for a while about his own memory. He tried the BlueVibe the day it arrived.
I swear I noticed an immediate change in his frustration levels. It was like night and day. He feels it's helping — but as the observer, I really notice it helping.
Lisa-Marie, on MikeWhat she's watching isn't a test score. It's the small friction of a busy day: what did they say, I can't remember what they said — was it Tuesday or Thursday? That, she says, is what's different. Not just sharper. Less ground down by the details.
She's worn it both ways, wrist and collar. She thought the wrist might have edged it, though she isn't sure whether that was the day or the placement. She wears the collar now, because it's the one you forget you have on.
A miniature donkey, a miniature mule, and a farrier appointment.
Lisa-Marie has had horses her whole life and still does bodywork on them. At home right now it's Daisy the miniature donkey and a rescue mule — the mule arriving the way Thor did, with high anxiety and no interest in being touched.
What she runs on the animals
- Vagus NerveBefore the farrier comes. "He's so much better." She can't say enough about this one.
- Brain BalanceBefore treatment. Calms them, and gets them noticeably more engaged.
- General InflammationHer standing favourite for horses.
- AnxietyGeneral-purpose, as needed.
Same device, same protocols, whether the body on the table is a fibromyalgia client, a big black-and-tan rescue dog, or a mule who'd rather you didn't.
Supporting the body allows the body to do what it needs to do. You don't have to always be treating the specific things. Support the body, and the body can do a lot of really cool stuff.
